Shaka on the Move

This year we have worked diligently towards our goals of educating, and counseling others on mental health issues, depression, and suicide in youth. We have publicized warning signs for depression and suicide during our luncheon this year where we showcased our new program, SHAKA ON THE MOVE. According to The American College Health Association 15% of students are depressed, and depression can lead to suicide. SHAKA ON THE MOVE is a mobile unit that will be traveling to college campuses to provide information on mental health, suicide prevention and intervention, and depression. The SHAKA ON THE MOVE mobile unit will also be parked at the Fresh Fish Company Restaurant’s annual Proof-A- Palooza car show in May. It can also be requested at health fairs and community events.

December 2016 was the first on- line auction of The Shaka Franklin Foundation for Youth. This is a new direction to help raise funds. The first items up for bid were 2 to 3 nights stays at luxury hotels around the country. Keep your eyes peeled for our emails containing links to the bidding page for each trip!

In November we were contacted concerning a college freshman who needed financial help. The student wouldn’t be allowed back unless the accrued tuition was paid. The Shaka Franklin Foundation gave a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to the student’s account to help pay the tuition.

25 Target and Walmart Gift Cards (for $25 each) were given to East High School students who were in need of extra funds for the Holidays.

The Shaka Franklin Foundation welcomes Dr. Raul Cardenas, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver to our Board of Trustees. Dr. Cardenas is also the Corporate Chairman for the 27th Annual Love Our Children Luncheon which will be at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Denver Tech Center on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Elijah Martinez a student in Mrs. Allison Sandler’s 5th grade class at Virginia Court Elementary School was chosen as the designer of the 2016 Shaka Franklin Foundation Holiday Card. His design was chosen from 13 submissions by his class. As recognition of their participation, the class received a check for $500. Mrs. Sandler used the funds to give the student’s a surprise party of pizza, drinks and balloons to show them how proud she was of their progress. She also used some of the funds to purchase needed educational games for the class. “The kids were so excited for the party. They were surprised by the pizza and sodas. My classes for years to come will benefit from the board games”, says Allison Sandler. All the students wrote thank you letters to The Shaka Franklin Foundation.
